Urban Connection Ministries |
The foremost focus of Urban Connection Ministries is to be a stepping stone into positive relationships and into a church family, and to break the cycle of dependency that keeps people in bondage to generational poverty.
Our mission statement is “Connecting the Disconnected.” With so much of our culture being self focused and disconnected, we are working hard to reverse this attitude in our students. Spiritual, career, family & parenting formation, as well as life skills development, broadening an individual’s sense of community and worldview are addressed as we minister to the whole person. As they learn new perspectives and skills, we expect them to reinvest responsibly into their own community.

Do You Care About Poverty? |
|
Do you even care about poverty? Most of us on the surface say we do - but deep down, I doubt it. Do we avoid driving or walking down certain streets? Do we shop at certain stores to avoid "those" people? Do we satisfy our guilt by throwing some change in a kettle at Christmas time or by dropping a can of generic peas in the office food drive box?
Poverty has a cost- we can pay it on purpose, or by force. Our tax bucks go to welfare, medicaid, cops, all related to poverty in some way. We pay for generational poverty to continue- and sometimes, I feel angry about that!
It is time to ACT!
I considered starting with a sad story, but decided it would cheapen the article, but I will share those another time. Stories about moms who want to escape poverty, the following story is not about them, It is about me.
I was a child in poverty.
I looked up to rappers and drug dealers. I wanted no part in working at a real job. I was in training to work the system, Sure, I wanted to be an astronaut or a rap star, but never going to a factory or sitting at a desk for 10 hours a day. When I thought about my adult life, what I really wanted was to be home raising my kids and hangin with my peeps.
